How to convert decimals and fractions

Converting a decimal to a fraction

Write the decimal digits over their place value, then reduce to lowest terms by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

0.75  →  75/100  →  ÷25  →  3/4
0.375  →  375/1000  →  ÷125  →  3/8
2.25  →  2 + 25/100  →  2 1/4  (= 9/4)

Converting a fraction to a decimal

Divide the numerator by the denominator.

3/8  →  3 ÷ 8  =  0.375
5/8  →  5 ÷ 8  =  0.625
2/3  →  2 ÷ 3  =  0.6667 (rounded)

Converting a repeating decimal to a fraction

A repeating decimal is exactly equal to a fraction. Tick the repeating-decimal option and mark the repeating digits with a |. For example 0.|3 means 0.333…

0.|3  (0.333…)  →  1/3
0.1|6  (0.1666…)  →  1/6
0.|142857  →  1/7

Steps in this calculator

  1. Choose a conversion mode at the top (Decimal → Fraction, Fraction → Decimal, Inches, Binary or Percent).
  2. Type your value into the field. For repeating decimals, tick the box and use the | marker.
  3. Press the Convert button — the result shows the simplified fraction, improper fraction, decimal and percent as relevant.
  4. Open the conversion chart for common decimal-fraction-percent values.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a decimal to a fraction?
Write the decimal over its place value and simplify. For example 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4. This calculator finds the greatest common divisor and reduces the fraction for you automatically.
How do you convert a repeating decimal to a fraction?
A repeating decimal equals an exact fraction. For example 0.333… = 1/3 and 0.1666… = 1/6. Tick the repeating-decimal box and mark the repeating digits with |, e.g. 0.|3 or 0.1|6.
How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. For example 3/8 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. Enter the numerator and denominator (and an optional whole number) and the tool returns the decimal and percent.
What is 0.625 as a fraction?
0.625 = 5/8. It is one of the standard inch fractions used in engineering drawings and machining.
How do I convert a binary fraction like 101.101 to decimal?
Each position after the binary point is a negative power of two: ½, ¼, ⅛ and so on. 101.101 = 5 + 0.5 + 0.125 = 5.625. Use the Binary Fraction mode to do this instantly.
Can it convert decimal inches to a fraction?
Yes. In Inches mode, enter a decimal inch value and choose the rounding (1/16", 1/32" or 1/64"). For example 0.375" = 3/8" and also shows the millimetre equivalent.
